Description
Skulls, as symbols, have been associated with the duality of life and death in many cultures. The addition of elevating its status by having it mounted on a padded base with an ormolu frame introduces a new layer of meaning. Perhaps the unseen curator sees it as a talisman for protection or strength and a symbol of power? It opens a dialogue concerning this unseen curator, why have they put this collection together? why have they abandoned it?
Storytelling has been gradually becoming more of a focus for my work. I seem to have elements of backstories that could go in all sorts of directions. Who do they live with? What do other rooms look like? It's never ending!

About the artist

Shropshire, United KingdomNatalie Toplass
Shropshire, United KingdomI’ve been trying to get to the root of why I paint what I paint, after much ruminating I think I’ve realised the different avenues my mind travels down. I’ve become more interested recently in a still life aspect to my work, looking at old toys and discarded objects and it’s the stories about the past, that I can almost see- just out of reach and stories are the main diet of my imagination.
