Description

Stellar Nursery, 2025
Acrylic, watercolour and ink on mineral stone sheet
59 x 42 cm / 23.5 x 16.6 in, unframed

This unique, original painting is created with highest quality archival and lightfast acrylics, watercolours and inks on a mineral stone sheet. The artwork will remain one-of-a-kind, as no prints, NFTs or other types of reproductions are or will be made available at any point in the future.

Titled, dated and signed on the backside of the artwork. A signed Certificate of Authenticity is enclosed.

The painting is supplied unframed to ensure maximum protection during shipping and full framing flexibility. Unglazed framing is recommended for optimal enjoyment of the artwork, as standard glazing distracts with reflections and anti-reflective glazing tends to distort colours.

Free shipping worldwide.

MATERIALS

My creative practice is rooted in my love of science, nature and colour. I work exclusively on archival mineral stone sheets made from calcium carbonate mixed with a small amount of resin for plyability and tear-resistance (think bendy eggshell). Corals make their skeletons exclusively from calcium carbonate. With life spans of up to 5000 years, they are the longest living animals on earth and living proof of the durability of the mineral stone surface. Unlike traditional paper, these sheets are not sensitive to humidity and do not deform or buckle when moist. Furthermore, the mineral stone sheet adopts stained glass properties when lit from the back, transforming the painting.

Mineral stone sheets are considerably more environmentally friendly than canvas and traditional pulp-based paper and excel in low resource impact by using renewable limestone (replenished >2x annual consumption). They avoid the need for deforestation and 2,700l water/kg farming with pesticides and soil depletion. In manufacturing they use 84% less energy and emit 67% less CO₂ without the use of chemicals, bleaches and wastewater. In disposal they recycle to non-toxic minerals, outperforming paper’s methane-releasing landfills and the non-recyclable organic decay of canvas.

I utilise lightfast, archival acrylics, watercolours and inks, requiring intimate knowledge of their unique individual properties, as each paint type and colour differs in viscosity and pigment weight, determining their interactive behaviour. This understanding allows me to balance control with the organic evolution of the materials on the unusual surface.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Milena Makani (b. 1984 in Sofia, Bulgaria) is a German contemporary painter based in London, UK. Marked by gestural and lyrical abstraction, Makani’s deeply introspective paintings depict colourful, abstract anatomic and psychological inner landscapes characterised by layered textures, fluid forms and complex gradients, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where feeling and exploration of self take precedence over form.

Living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and permanent pain, Makani’s work gives a distinct visual language to the complexities of the human condition and the molecules and emotions that connect us all. Rooted in curiosity and guided by an intuitive connection to her inner world, she investigates the colourful facets of her lived experience and themes of resilience, energy, serenity, fragility, stoicism and joy.

Utilising the unique attributes of various types of acrylics, watercolours and inks and their interactive properties on rare mineral stone sheets, Makani’s painting practice blends control and organic process in a striking balance between intention, spontaneity and manipulation.

Makani’s work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Iceland and her paintings are featured in international publications and private collections across the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Bulgaria, Egypt, the United States and Canada.

“My practice explores the shifting boundaries between presence and absence, where memory, perception and sensation converge and dissolve. Each painting acts as a threshold, reflecting the viewer’s inner landscape and shifting with their emotional state. Instead of resolution, I aim to offer an introspective experience that invites quiet exploration of vulnerability, strength and the complexity of being. Ultimately, my paintings serve as invitations into the less-visited corners of the self. They encourage contemplation, suggesting that meaning is never fixed but continually shaped by presence, experience and context.” — Milena Makani
