Description

The artwork was inspired by abstraction in the landscape. Drawings, photographs of shadows and photograms have been manipulated to create a starting point for the painting. Monochrome tonal shades of oil paint have been used to create the geometric backgound and the melting colourful form in the foreground has been created using oilpaint, acrylic and household paint. I was reading about the 'underland' and the Antropocene when making this painting.

About the artist

Stuart Jones

Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

I have been practicing as an artist for 25 years. I am originally from the North West of England, I studied Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University, but I now live and work out of a studio in Herfordshire. I work in mainly oil paint and mixed media on canvas, my work is informed by the urban and rural landscape and ideas of utopia, dystopia, the sublime and the Anthropocene. I explore the complex relationship between human life and the natural environment, portraying a world that is dramatic and beautiful but also constantly changing due to the climate crisis.

I was a Digswell Arts Fellow (2017-2024) and I have been shortlisted for the Beep Painting Prize (2022), John Moores Painting Prize (20200 and awarded the Contemporary Arts Trust Prize (2019)
