Elafonisi Lagoon
Stuart Reid
£1,250
Description
Elafonisi Lagoon was inspired by the vivid pink sands and turquoise waters of Elafonisi Lagoon Crete. I wanted to capture the tranquillity and unique colours that make this place feel almost otherworldly. The work also reflects the lagoon’s spiritual atmosphere—shaped by its natural beauty, nearby monastery, and history as a sanctuary. My aim is to evoke a sense of calm and connection, inviting viewers to pause and experience the wonder that Elafonisi inspires.

His paintings have been shown nationally and internationally and are in public, corporate and private collections.
My practice navigates the intersection of figuration and abstraction, drawing inspiration from the natural world. Colour, shape, and space are central to my expression, with the changing light of the landscape profoundly influencing my work. To capture transient moments and the interplay of light, I create drawings and watercolours on paper, often using sketchbooks and photography as tools for documentation. These visual records serve as references in the studio, but my process extends beyond mere reproduction; I look to distil the essence of each moment, allowing my paintings to develop from
The physicality of painting is integral to my approach. I employ a variety of brushes and techniques, sometimes applying paint with my hand. This process transforms initial marks into works that oscillate between the figurative and the abstract, inviting viewers to engage with the canvas and experience the dynamic relationship between figure and nature. My art aims to evoke an emotional response, encouraging viewers to embark on a sensory journey that transcends the tangible. Through my work, I invite contemplation of the boundaries between reality and imagination, celebrating the subtle beauty of the natural world and the expressive possibilities of paint.
