I’m a queer artist living and working in Colne Valley, West Yorkshire. I typically use oil pastels or wax pastels to create illustrations of natural forms inspired by the landscapes surrounding me. I experiment with colour as a way of appreciating nature, whilst knowing that I can never fully replicate its beauty. I like the freedom of using any colour and expressing what I see through wild mark making.
I love colour and pastels offer a vast range of bold and vibrant choices with a strong pigment. My colour selecting process is something that’s ever changing. I start by picking 3-4 colours that work well together, then I choose more because I just can’t help myself. I find a sort of freedom in impulsively putting down colour compared to meticulously planning my next mark. Nature frequently takes my breath away and while my imagination is wild, colourful and vibrant - its ever tethered to the source material.
